The Long Reach High Dance Department has presented a Winter Dance Concert this past January! This concert showcased so many emotions throughout the evening with performances from Dance I, Dance II, Dance III, Jr. Company, and Dance Company.
Before the show started, there was a series of videos made by Dance showing the different activities and dance classes around Long Reach, as well as other arts programs around the school. This dance concert showcased the Long Reach Dance Company executing many different dance styles and music, many of them popular with the audience,. and each dance had a message going along with it. There were 10 dances, with each dance class having two dances.
Dance Company started the show off with a dance called, “Try”, choreographed by Dance director, Ms. Charonne Butler. The girls danced in a hip-hop style, showing and trying different moves together, which they did not disappoint making each move on point! Their second dance choreographed by student, Madelynn Kesler called “Twice” had the girls in gray marble costumes, where they stayed in complete sync throughout.
Junior Company started with “Feeling Good,” eponymous to the song by Michael Bublé. The dance was sassy, and displayed a feel good song and dance, with the girls in red, sparkly dresses. Then, their second dance “Goodbye,” in which they starred in sparkly, multi-colored dresses, showed a sense of farewell through the dance, as the concert was getting closer to the end.
“Disappear” showed a feeling of sadness and despair within its choreography and emotion. The girls’ emotions weren’t dull at any second of this performance. They lastly performed their dance, “Married,”, which presented the events of what a bride feels or goes through right before she goes the aisle. The dance showed a sense of girlhood as the bride was with her bridesmaid throughout the dance.
Dance II performed their exhilaratingly happy, “Shake It,” song, which gave a ‘Hairspray’ inspired twist to their performance with a lot of fast movement choreography and partner work.
They ended off with their second dance to ‘Gold Rush’ by Taylor Swift, with the dancers in satin sparkly outfits, and with a background aesthetic that made you feel like you were in a dream. It really went well with the theme of the song and made you feel close to it.
Dark Red by Steve Lacy, a popular song of this generation, was used to perform an alien-like dance with a chilling feel to it. It was seriously one for the books. The final dance was performed by Dance I, called “You,” which was used with the song, “If I Ain’t Got You” by Alicia Keys. The girls implemented ballet in the performance by using strong, slow, and well-controlled movements to show the emotion as the song expresses true unconditional love.
Long Reach’s Dance Company was able to provide their audience with so many unique dances and styles. Every dancer and choreographer was able to showcase the talent that each and every one of the dancer’s had. You can come see them perform again on May 2nd and 3rd!
