A Day of Books

“I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells” - Dr. Seuss

March 6, 2023

Enjoy March 2nd with a Dr. Seuss book. As kids, his books brought laughter and today, bring us welcomed nostalgia. Read Across America is the nation’s largest celebration of reading focusing on the encouragement of literacy across all grade levels. Read Across America was created by the National Education Association (NEA) and developed into a year-long program to promote students’ literacy every day of the year.

Dr. Seuss was born on March 2nd, he is most known for his popular rhyming kids books including Green Eggs & Ham, The Cat in the Hat, How the Grinch Stole Christmas and many more. Reenactments of his work can be seen all across the world with popular movie and show adaptations.

Freshman Aniyah West enthuses, “In elementary school we used to read books like Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You?, Horton Hears a Who, & Dr. Seuss’s ABC’s. I always looked forward to it.”

The importance of this movement lies in how it teaches children the importance of reading by making it enjoyable for youth. Such support for reading is especially necessary as in 2020, The Guardian reported that “just 26% of under-18’s spend time each day reading.”

We should hold more significance for the day to encourage reading from a young age and provide a better education for our youth.
