Ignite the Light

March 31, 2016

“In order to produce greatness cohesiveness must be involved.” Junior Asha Rogers posed this statement to the student body during the LRHS Ignite the Light session on February 24th.

This event was organized by Rogers, Junior Estrelle Alleyne, Senior Jesse Zaky, and Junior Ifeoluwamide Sokoya; and served as an open discussion about racial issues in Howard County and abroad.

One hundred students signed up to go to this open discussion where students gave speeches pertaining to their view of racial hatred and its presence.

As students fought for the spotlight to speak and rushed against the time to convey their thoughts, significant points were unveiled. “It’s not just Mt. Hebron or any particular school; it’s a global issue,” said Senior Andre Broadnax.

Several students condemned Howard County for its initial attempt to try and contain this incident. Zaky said, “To cover up any racial matter is to ignore the severity of the problem.”

Ignite the Light opened the door to discussing these controversial issues and in order to give them the attention they deserve. The student body carries the task of continuing these essential conversations to fight the presence of racism wherever it emerges.
