From Saturday Night Live to Black Panther, Daniel Kaluuya has captivated screens both big and small; anyone who’s gone to the movies within the past few years has seen this award winning actor. Although his IMDb page lists an impressive history in film, potentially his most famous pieces of work are the Jordan Peele movies, Get Out and Nope. Get Out premiered in 2017 while Nope came out just last year, leaving critics and audiences alike raving.
Kaluuya, born 1989, has been in the film industry since 2006, but his performance in Get Out did more than catapult him to a new level of fame, it also sparked a conversation about race. The horror story has a plot overtly focused on race, but the film’s director, Jordan Peele, masterfully creates a piece of work with impactful symbolism and underlying messages woven throughout, which Kaluuya brings to life. Viewers took to the film, and Kaluuya’s character helped bring many racial issues out from under the rug and into the light.
Additionally, both works earned him massive attention from award organizations, as dozens of wins and nominations added to his total of 47 wins and 89 nominations. Two years ago, in 2021, his work earned him an Oscar, the award of “Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role” being given for his part as Fred Hampton in Judas and the Black Messiah. Kaluuya has done revolutionary work in film, and with his future projects, like the upcoming Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, his legacy is only beginning.
